Perfectly Logical

Every year prior to this year, we have had three recess times. One in the morning block of time, one directly after lunch, and one in our afternoon block of time. This year, because of scheduling issues from the addition of three new classes, there simply isn't the time or the ability to have all three.

Before we left for lunch on Thursday, our first day, I told the kids there wasn't a lunch recess anymore and that I would pick them up from the gym/cafeteria. Apparently they weren't listening because no sooner did we get back to our classroom did three of them shout out, "But we didn't go to recess!"

So I explained... again... that we only had two recesses this year. And one of my kids goes, "so in second grade, we'll only have one recess?" And somebody else shouts out, "Yeah. And in third grade, we don't have any recess!"

All of which seems perfectly logical. They got three recesses in Kindergarten and are only getting two in first grade. But I went ahead and explained to them why it was and that even Kindergarten only got two recesses this year.

I just hope they keep this higher level thinking throughout the year!
